Report on our First 2010-MW Work-Weekend

The following is a brief report on the success of our first 2010-MW Work-Weekend. In a few brief words, the primary objectives of our first work-weekend we all completed and in fact a few other future goals were achieved as well.  First, I was able to do a complete cutting of all the Rendezvous Field including the Family Camp area and a new work-trailer turn-around and storage area.  I also was able to locate and re-clear the two "cross-over paths" between the Modern Camping area and the Rendezvous Field.  All of this took the better part of a day-and-a half of sitting on a tractor with a brush-hog (about 9-10hrs), but this work has now been completed.  A repeat of this will need to be done next spring, but the grass should not be as long and it will be much easier since I have now located all my road and pathway markers.  I also was able to locate and clear the Archery Woods-Walk area so this will not be as difficult to be done next year. Of course some trimming will need to be done for where we want to place our targets, but in general the primary work is now completed.  I also have located a source of Large Round Hay Bails which we will be able to use for back-stopping our Static Archery Range and use as safety back-stops on our Archery Woods-Walk as well.  All of this work was completed in the first 2 days, quite fortunately, because on Friday evening it began to rain (a cold icy rain) and I am told Friday night a Gail of 50 mph winds blew in off Lake Superior and Saturday was an all day rain with 5 foot waves lapping the shoreline of Lake Superior.  To see this was awe inspiring and yet a little frightful.  Fortunately the rain stopped late Saturday evening - but then both Saturday and Sunday evenings the temperatures dropped to below freezing.  Believe me, I now have "practical experience" with what the "Old Traders" meant when they spoke of a two dog night - my dogs made the trip with me and we were "tenting" it, and I will be forever grateful to them for helping to keeping me warm those two nights.
Sunday and Monday were spent with a series of Interviews with people that I once again needed to touch base with.  I am happy to say that all of those meetings did go well.  Chief among them was my meeting with the director of the Porcupine State Mountain State Park and I am happy to report that we will be able to offer a Period Style "one/ two night Trek" into the Porcupine State Park Mts. which John Curry will lead.  Plans for this Trek are still being developed, but this should prove to be a real plus in the program offering for our event.   I also was able to meet with Father Michel of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Ontonagon and resolve any concerns he had about my role with our event and was able to re-confirm our ability to utilize the church as our Emergency Evacuation Site should we need one. I also met with the Ontonagon Health Department and submitted our application (and $163) for our temporary camp permit.  I am also proud to be able to say that almost every business in town now has a public flyer posted announcing our event. In conclusion this trip proved to be 6 long days of much work and lots of running, but I feel we accomplish much and another major step has been taken in bring our 2010-MW Rendezvous to Ontonagon.
Respectfully Submitted,
Father Thomas   DONE
