MICHIGAN’S UPPER PENINSULA TOURISM…The Land, The Water, & The People
Carved eons ago by forces over which man had no control and then painted from Mother Nature’s rich and glorious palette, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan became a wonderland of rich emerald forests, small mountains, and meandering rivers. Bordered on all but one side by Lakes Michigan and Superior, the U.P. lakeshore ranges from softly drifting sand to rocky covered beaches where agates and other treasures can be found to fill children’s pockets. Sunsets are magnificent and on clear crisp nights the colorful rays of the Aurora Borealis can often be seen dancing overhead.
Ontonagon, known as "Harbor Town", is built along stunningly picturesque shores washed by Hiawatha’s "shining big-sea-water", the waters of Lake Superior. It’s nestled in the sun-drenched foothills of the Porcupine Mountains, which stand proudly to the west. To the east are the Firesteels and the Hurons. Northeasterly is Copper Harbor, home of Brockway Mountain.
Ontonagon and the Copper Country, as well as the entire Upper Peninsula, offer things that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and from all walks of like, even if that enjoyment is no more than wading in the cool waters of Lake Superior while looking for agates, wetting a line in one of our many inland lakes and streams, or taking a drive through the Ottawa National Forest to look for wildlife or pick plump blueberries alongside the road.
